Situation:
Pet products supplier Drs. Foster and Smith of Rhinelander, WI had been looking for ways to be environmentally
friendly and they found it with StarchTech’s biodegradable packing peanuts and the
EcoSystem Packaging Solution. The EcoSystem Solution allows Drs. Foster and Smith to produce
their own packaging material saving them money, time and resources as they simplified the overall
system which provided their packing material. In addition, Drs. Foster and Smith were able to
achieve their goal of using an environmentally, as well as a pet friendly, product.
"Using a Styrofoam peanut was our #1 complaint from customers", says Audrey Schmidt, Warehouse
Manager at Drs. Foster and Smith. "We were looking for an alternative that was ‘green’ and
less expensive", she continued. The Styrofoam peanuts that were being used were difficult for customers
to dispose of or store until they could be recycled, if that was an option available to them.
This can be especially difficult for apartment dwellers or anyone with limited mobility. It was time to
find a product that was environmentally friendly as well as economically friendly.
Solution:
The benefits of making the change to the StarchTech system has translated to several levels for
Drs. Foster and Smith. Now, they need only order 1 truck load of resin, a small starch bead that
is used to make the peanut, rather than 20+ truck loads of fi nished material. Simplifying this step
saves TIME and RESOURCES. The time and resources needed to order, pay for, receive, unload and
dispense 20+ truck loads of packaging material is now replaced with 1 truck load of resin.
Environmentally, it’s a benefit by providing a biodegradable product for their customers and by drastically
reducing the amount of trucks on the road to deliver the packing material. In addition, Drs. Foster
and Smith no longer had to be concerned with delivery delays due to supply or weather; a key
concern in their Rhinelander, WI location. The Drs. Foster and Smith customers love the idea that
they’re using a "Green" packing material that can be composted or disposed of in a sink or tub with
running water. A product that is pet friendly is an added benefit as well.
Results:
Overall, Drs. Foster and Smith’s use of the StarchTech’s patented process and EcoSystem Packaging
Solution has surpassed their expectations. "In addition to the many positive comments from
customers thanking us for making the switch, our employees feel better about using the biodegradable
peanuts too", says Ms. Schmidt. The goal of saving money, time and the environment was
