Biodegradability in Marine (Water) Conditions
StarchTech has completed the ASTM 7081 established for labeling materials biodegradable in "marine waters and sediments". This specification covers non-floating products made from plastics (including packaging and coatings) that are designed to be biodegradable under the marine environmental conditions of aerobic marine waters or anaerobic marine sediments, or both. (Possible environments are shallow and deep salt water and brackish water.)

Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP)
The BMP test, performed by the University of North Carolina, is considered a screening test for anaerobic biodegradability. If a material does not exhibit conversion to methane and carbon dioxide in a BMP test, the biodegradation in a landfill is highly unlikely. StarchTech successfully completed the BMP screening test well within the allotted time of 60 days for test completion.
